Where it covers

  • England
  • Wales
  • Northern Ireland
  • Scotland(not covered)

Scotland publishes recorded crime by council. It has its own layers.

How it is made

Open Index shows the figures as Police.uk publishes them, for the areas they were published for: map points.

Counts for larger areas are added up from map points.

Before you use it

  • Approximate location. Police.uk moves every crime to the nearest of a fixed set of map points, so one dot gathers crimes from nearby streets.
  • Each map point stands for at least 8 postal addresses, or none, so a dot is never one home. Open Index shows the points exactly where police.uk puts them and never moves or splits them.
  • These are crimes and anti-social behaviour incidents reported to police and recorded by them, not all the crime that happens.
  • Outcomes keep changing for months after a crime first appears, and each month's file shows the latest outcome only. The Police Service of Northern Ireland and British Transport Police publish no outcomes, and anti-social behaviour has none.
  • About 1.5% of crimes have no location, so they are not on the map.
  • When the map is zoomed out, nearby map points are grouped into one circle with the total count.
  • Greater Manchester has no map points, because its police force has supplied almost no data since July 2019. Gloucestershire has none for February to August 2026.
