Terms of use
Last updated 20 October 2026.
Free to use
Open Index is free to read and use, including its API and /mcp service. No account or payment is needed.
Licences and credit
Open Index’s own text and the figures it works out are available under CC BY 4.0. You may copy, share and adapt them, including for commercial use. Give the credit “Source: Open Index, openindex.co.uk”, link to the licence and say if you made changes.
Source data keeps its publishers’ licences. Each source page gives the licence, credit and any limits that apply. Keep those credits with ours. Our licence does not replace a publisher’s terms.
Using the figures
Figures are shown as published by their sources, or clearly labelled where we work them out. They describe the period and area beside them. Publishers can revise figures, and coverage can be incomplete.
The service and its figures are provided as they are, without a warranty of accuracy, completeness, availability or suitability for a particular purpose. Check the source and caveats before relying on a figure. Nothing in these terms limits rights or liability that cannot lawfully be limited.
Fair use of the API and MCP
Use the API and /mcp considerately. Cache results where you can, avoid repeated requests for the same data and use downloads for bulk work.
The API allows up to 120 requests a minute per IP address. The /mcp service allows up to 300. A shared site limit also applies to bursts. When a request returns 429, wait for the time in its Retry-After header before trying again. Limits may change to keep the service available.
Do not try to bypass limits or disrupt the service. See the API guide for access and the privacy policy for how requests are handled.
