Every layer is drawn at the detail it was published at, and no finer.

A borough average cannot become a street map by zooming in. Open Index keeps the level visible, so the same street in Hackney looks very different depending on what you ask of it.

Who runs Open Index

Open Index is made by Mack Grenfell. It is independent: it is not run or endorsed by any of the bodies whose data it shows.

Why it exists

The UK publishes a great deal about its places: house prices, recorded crime, deprivation, schools, broadband, air quality and more. It is spread across dozens of publishers, each with its own files, its own areas and its own dates.

Open Index puts it on one map and one page per place, for all four nations where the data allows, keeps every figure at the level it was published at, and says where each number came from.

How the numbers are kept honest

Each figure carries the period it describes, the date it was published, the date it was fetched, its source and its licence. Gaps are hatched and labelled with their reason, never left blank or shown as zero.

Measures that the nations calculate differently, such as deprivation, are never ranked together. Anything Open Index works out itself, such as house prices against pay, says “Worked out by Open Index” and explains its method on its source page. No page text or number is written by a language model.

The data is refreshed in numbered snapshots. The changelog lists what changed in each one.

Privacy

Open Index sets no cookies, has no accounts and runs no advertising. Small conveniences, such as the layers you used recently, are kept in your own browser’s storage and are not sent to us.

No analytics or tracking scripts run on these pages.

Licences and credits

Most figures are published under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Each layer’s source page gives its own licence and credit line, and anyone reusing a figure should keep them.

The three maps above show the UK House Price Index (July 2026), ONS small area population estimates (mid-2024) and street-level crime from police.uk (August 2026), drawn on OpenStreetMap.
