How it is made
Open Index shows the figures as Department for Education, Ofsted, Welsh Government, Scottish Government and Ordnance Survey publish them, for the areas they were published for: map points.
Counts for larger areas are added up from map points.
Before you use it
- Inspection systems differ in each nation; Open Index shows Ofsted outcomes for England only. Estyn in Wales no longer gives grades, and Scotland publishes its grades only inside each report.
- Ofsted's renewed framework (from November 2025) gives a grade for each area and no overall grade. Ofsted says these grades can't be compared with earlier ones, so Open Index names the framework next to every outcome.
- Ofsted outcomes cover state-funded schools. Independent schools and colleges are inspected separately and show no outcome here.
- Each nation publishes its list at a different time. England's list is daily, Wales's is from April 2026 and Scotland's from July 2026.
- A few schools have no published location. They sit at their postcode point and are marked as approximate.
- Pupil numbers are from the January 2026 school census in England and Wales. Scotland's are not shown.
