How it is made
Worked out by Open Index from the UK House Price Index and the ONS earnings survey.
The council's average house price for the latest month in the UK House Price Index, divided by its median gross yearly pay for full-time workers who live there in the latest year of the ONS earnings survey. The period is the pay year. Councils need both figures.
This snapshot uses average house price for July 2026 and median full-time pay for 2025.
Larger areas use the publisher’s own figures, never an average of smaller areas.
Zoom in past council level and the map keeps the council shapes and says so, rather than inventing detail.
- Council2025 only
Before you use it
- This is not the ONS affordability ratio, which uses different inputs and covers England and Wales only.
- Prices and pay come from different periods. The prices are for the latest month published and the pay for the latest year.
- Barnsley and Sheffield pay figures are for their boundaries before April 2025.
Colours on the map
Seven groups with about the same number of areas each, worked out from the latest period and held for every period, so colours mean the same over time.
