How it is made
Worked out by Open Index from the mid-year population estimates.
The mid-year population estimate divided by the estimate a year earlier, less one, as a percentage to one decimal place.
Larger areas use the publisher’s own figures, never an average of smaller areas.
Zoom in past council level and the map keeps the council shapes and says so, rather than inventing detail.

Before you use it
- This compares two consecutive mid-year estimates for the same area. Both are estimates, so a change of a few tenths of a per cent may not be real.
- Change comes from births, deaths and people moving in and out, including students and international migrants.
- Barnsley and Sheffield figures are for their boundaries before April 2025.
Colours on the map
Fixed breaks, held for every period, so colours mean the same over time.
How Open Index describes it
