How it is made
Open Index shows the figures as Office for National Statistics publishes them, for the areas they were published for: councils.
Larger areas use the publisher’s own figures, never an average of smaller areas.
Zoom in past council level and the map keeps the council shapes and says so, rather than inventing detail.

Before you use it
- This is pay for people who live in the council area, wherever they work. Pay by place of work is a different measure.
- Pay is measured in April each year. The latest year is provisional and is revised the following October.
- It comes from a sample survey, so small councils have wide margins of error. ONS suppresses figures it judges unreliable.
- Barnsley and Sheffield figures are for their boundaries before April 2025.
Colours on the map
Fixed breaks, held for every period, so colours mean the same over time.
How Open Index describes it
