## How it is worked out

The crimes and anti-social behaviour incidents recorded in the 12 months, divided by the area's residents, times 1,000. Residents are each area's population in the register: mid-2024 estimates for neighbourhoods and middle areas, mid-2025 for councils, regions and nations. A ward uses the neighbourhoods added up into it. A region or nation that holds councils with no figure uses the population of the councils that are counted. Areas with fewer than 10 crimes in the 12 months have no rate.

Scotland publishes recorded crime by council. It has its own layers.

## Gaps

- Greater Manchester Police has supplied almost no data to police.uk since July 2019, so there is no figure for Greater Manchester: 995 (Bolton 005A, Bolton 005B, Bolton 001A, Bolton 003A, Bolton 003B, Bolton 003C)
- Fewer than 10 crimes were recorded in these 12 months, so no rate is shown: 5 (Bexley 002C, Croydon 030B, Newham 011D, Newham 015E, Redbridge 032C)

## Caveats

- These are crimes and anti-social behaviour incidents reported to police and recorded by them, not all the crime that happens.
- The rate is per resident. Places that many people work in or visit, such as Westminster and the City of London, have far more crime than their residents alone would suggest, so their rates look very high. The same is true of town centres, shopping centres and stations at neighbourhood level.
- Each 12 months ends with the month named, so August 2026 means September 2025 to August 2026.
- Each crime is counted in the neighbourhood of the map point police.uk gives it, which is near where it happened, not an address. Areas are added up from neighbourhoods.
- Greater Manchester has no figures: its police force has supplied almost no data to police.uk since July 2019. Gloucestershire has none that include February to August 2026.
- Crimes recorded by British Transport Police on the railway are left out, because it has supplied no data since February 2025.
- About 1.5% of crimes have no location and are in no area figure.
- An area with fewer than 10 crimes in the 12 months has no rate.
- Ward figures add up the neighbourhoods that sit mostly inside each ward, so they are close to, but not exactly, the ward's own.

## Example: Hackney

In the 12 months to August 2026, police recorded crimes and anti-social behaviour in Hackney at a rate of 146.2 per 1,000 people.
That compares with 123.5 per 1,000 people across London.
