## Gaps

- Scotland measures deprivation its own way. See the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation 2020: 32 (Clackmannanshire, Dumfries and Galloway, East Ayrshire, East Lothian, East Renfrewshire, Na h-Eileanan Siar)
- Wales measures deprivation its own way. See the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation 2025: 22 (Isle of Anglesey, Gwynedd, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Wrexham)
- Northern Ireland measures deprivation its own way. See the Northern Ireland Multiple Deprivation Measure 2017: 11 (Antrim and Newtownabbey, Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon, Belfast, Causeway Coast and Glens, Derry City and Strabane, Fermanagh and Omagh)

## Caveats

- This adds up the neighbourhoods in deciles 1 and 2 of the English Indices of Deprivation, which are the most deprived 20% of neighbourhoods in England. Open Index counts them for each council from MHCLG's published deciles.
- A count depends on how many neighbourhoods a council has, so large councils tend to have more. Compare the share of neighbourhoods to compare councils.
- Neighbourhoods are counted in the council they belong to now, including Barnsley and Sheffield after the boundary change of April 2025.
- England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland each measure deprivation their own way, so Open Index never ranks or compares them together.

## Example: Hackney

In Hackney, 60 neighbourhoods are among the most deprived 20% of neighbourhoods in England.
