England measures deprivation its own way. See the English Indices of Deprivation 2025.

Wales measures deprivation its own way. See the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation 2025.

Scotland measures deprivation its own way. See the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation 2020.

## Caveats

- Rank 1 is the most deprived neighbourhood in Northern Ireland and rank 890 the least. The rank says where a neighbourhood sits among the others, not how deprived it is. Rank 100 is more deprived than rank 200, but not twice as deprived.
- This is the 2017 edition, the latest. Most of the data are from 2015 and 2016, and NISRA has announced no update.
- The 890 areas are the 2001 super output areas. They differ from the 2021 data zones used for other Northern Ireland figures, so the outlines will not line up exactly.
- NISRA says its rankings cannot be used to show how deprivation has changed over time.
- The map colours the areas in ten groups of 89 ranks, from the darkest (most deprived) to the lightest. NISRA publishes no deciles.
- The indices describe areas, not people. Many people who are not deprived live in deprived areas, and many deprived people live in areas that are not.
- England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland each measure deprivation their own way, so Open Index never ranks or compares them together.
