# Highest and lowest recorded crime rates in England (August 2026)

City of London had the highest recorded crime rate of England’s 280 councils in August 2026, at 618.2 per 1,000 people.

Broadland had the lowest, at 39.3 per 1,000 people. The middle council, Maidstone, had 85.4 per 1,000 people.

16 councils have no figure, and they are listed at the end with the reason.

Rates are per resident, so places that many people work in or visit, such as Westminster, the City of London and other city centres, have far higher rates than their residents alone would suggest.

Worked out by Open Index from police.uk crime records and ONS and NISRA population estimates.
